There is no better way to welcome fall than with warm apple pie. And in this recipe you can dress up an old favorite with the sweet, crumbly goodness of streusel. Each bite has the perfect combination of buttery, flaky crust topped with richly spiced apple filling and covered with warm streusel. The only thing that can make this more divine would be a dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream!

Ingredients (Apple Pie)

  • Pre-made/homemade pie-crust*
  • 5 large apples  and sliced into semi-thick slices (approx 9-10 cups)
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup  all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract (optional)

Crumble Topping

  • 1/2 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup + 1tbsp salted butter, melted

Method

Prep Time: 15 min

Cook Time: 45-55 min

Serves (8-10)

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large bowl, combine and toss the apples in the associated ingredients (listed above) and set aside. Meanwhile, prepare the crumble topping by mixing the remaining ingredients in a separate bowl.
  2. Add the apple mixture to your prepared crust, and sprinkle the crumble on top (evenly). Bake for 20 min and then lower the oven temp. by 25 degrees; the bake for another 35-40 min. NOTE: you may want to cover the pie with foil if you see excessive browning.
  3. Let sit at room temperature and then serve with caramel and/or ice-cream.
